July marks the start of summer, which means it's time to get ready for scorching temperatures – in 2021 hot temperatures have arrived early, and in many parts of the country are record-breaking. Both plants and people will suffer because of the extreme heat.
Small Farm readers with vegetable gardens will need to be prepared for July. Prepare for the hotter month in accordance with your grow zone's requirements, as each grow zone has its own list of needs.
Here are four vegetable gardening tips to help ensure your vegetable garden thrives in July, no matter what your grow zone:
1. Water Your Plants
Water is essential throughout the hottest months of the year. Instead of watering your plants more frequently with less depth, it's vital to attempt to water plants deeply. If you receive less than an inch of rain each week in your garden, make sure to water more often to ensure your plants get enough water.
2. Bugs In the Garden
In your garden, bugs are unavoidable. July appears to be the month that brings the most bugs to the surface. Remember that there are also helpful insects like ladybugs, honeybee etc. in your garden. If you discover your garden is being ravaged by insects who are eating your garden, you'll need to move quickly to preserve it. To keep insects out of your garden, you can use natural or store-bought insecticides or pesticides, handpick large bugs, or use plant nets or row covers.
3. Use Mulch
During the summer, mulch is extremely useful. Placing mulch around plants helps them retain moisture, whether it comes from nature or from the water you apply.
4. Stake Plants
The importance of staking tall plants cannot be overstated. The stems may break if you don't stake them, and the produce may tumble to the ground. Plants that grow on the ground are also more vulnerable to disease, making harvest more difficult.
The attention you devote to your vegetable garden in July will hopefully help to yield excellent harvest results in the fall.
