Rémi Taillon and Sophie Brodeur, grain-fed veal producers from Saint-Dominique, recently earned the title of Quebec’s Outstanding Young Farmers for 2023.
This recognition was conferred during an event at the Centre de Congrès de St-Hyacinthe, celebrating the best in young farming talent.
Sophie, with a rich farming background, has always been passionate about agriculture. Raised on a milk-calf and field crop farm, she nurtured her dream of continuing her family's legacy.
After earning a college degree in animal production and a certificate in environmental science, she joined the Quebec Pork Development Center.
Rémi's journey began outside of farming. Originally an engineer specializing in biotechnology, Rémi’s entrepreneurial spirit soon led him to the farming world.
In 2009, Sophie’s father presented them with an incredible opportunity — a two-year trial run on the family farm.
This period was transformative for the duo, allowing them to sharpen their technical skills and gauge their passion for the farming lifestyle.
Their commitment became evident when they purchased 50% of the farm's shares just two years later. Over time, they secured complete ownership.
Today, their farm, Ferme Réso, stands as a testament to their hard work and vision. They cultivate 476 acres and produce 1,200 grain-fed calves annually.
What's impressive is their sustainable approach; all the grain corn fed to the calves is grown on their farm, exemplifying their dedication to agro-environmental practices.
Rémi and Sophie’s journey showcases the dynamic and evolving world of farming in Quebec.
Their achievements are not just a testament to their individual talents but also highlight the growing potential of sustainable and local agriculture in Canada.
