Methane is a potent greenhouse gas — 25X more powerful than carbon dioxide. Methane is also a natural by-product of ruminant digestion. Researchers have been looking for ways to reduce the methane emissions from ruminants and thereby reduce the impact of livestock on global climate change.
Scientists found that when cows ingest oregano, they release up to 25 per cent less methane. In addition, oregano has been found to improve the milk’s fatty acid composition. In Denmark, scientists are conducting a four-year study into the impact of oregano, specifically Greek oregano (Origanum vulgare ssp hirtum) on methane emissions and milk quality. In particular, they are investigating whether oregano is best fed as hay or silage, and how to maximize the essential oils in the oregano.
