Worm composters (vermiculture) are an easy way to compost a variety of food and other organic waste found around the kitchen and garden. The resulting worm castings create a nutrient rich compost.
The speed and efficiency of the vermicomposting process keeps typical composting odour down making this unit I saw at Home Hardware, Grand Bend appropriate for indoor use and for use year-round.
The unit has a channel running around the outside of each tray to collect water and prevent the bedding from drying out along the edges.
Fifty-two angled migration tunnels extend down to the base of each tray providing ample opportunity for worms to migrate between trays. Red wigglers are the worm suggested for use in this composter
“Worm tea” is the liquid collected in the reservoir base. It makes an excellent fertilizer for plants by mixing one part worm tea with one part water and applying to plants periodically.
Proudly Made in Canada!
Editor’s tip: It is not advisable to release red wigglers into the garden as they are a non-native species and will die in cold weather. They are also not considered to be soil worms and would not be affective in creating compost in soil.
