I am fascinated by a gift from my youngest daughter. They are called thumb cutters. The package consisted of four thumb cutters – two with fingernail blades and two with right angle blades all encased in a silicone form to fit your thumb. It also comes with finger guards for the index and middle fingers, as the blades are very sharp.
In theory there are two pairs of blades that enables both hands to harvest at the same time. Since my floral design skills are rusty, I am using my right hand only to cut with the thumb cutter. The right-angled blade is good for cutting flowers, quickly and cleanly.
As well as florist work, I could see it coming in handy harvesting stemmed fruits or veg. Again, a one-handed approach appeals.
The thumb cutter also comes with a thumb nail blade that would be good to remove thorns on roses and also in the farm kitchen to scrape garlic or ginger for example.
Editor’s tip: Start out cautiously using one handed thumb cutting action.
