Overwatering and underwatering can both be detrimental. And it can be hard to get the timing and amount just right. SproutboxGarden.com help with some watering tips for being productive and water-wise in their sizable garden boxes.
Watering in the morning is best. The soil is cooler and less likely to evaporate, and plants will have an extended period to absorb the water. Watering in the evening can lead to waterlogged soil and fungal diseases. Watering in the middle of the day can lead to water losses due to evaporation. Conserve water and promote healthy plants by watering in the morning.
Use a soaker hose -- a great tool for watering your garden. It delivers water directly to the base of plants, minimizing waste and ensuring that the water reaches the roots. Soaker hoses are easy to install and can be left in place during the growing season.
Mulch your garden -- and help retain moisture in the soil and reduce the need for frequent watering. Mulch also helps to control weeds and regulate soil temperature, to help plants grow better. Common mulching materials include straw, leaves, and wood chips.
Through the Sproutbox Garden Program, orders help Canadian communities, schools and not-for-profit organizations.
