An axe is a hand tool that is used for chopping, splitting, piercing, and more. Axes can be classified into three main types, splitting axes, forest axes and log-building axes. The main difference between types is the edge or bit. Most commonly, the edge faces the direction of striking, parallel to the handle.
Safety Tips for Axe Use
Clear the Area
Clear to one axe-length and 360 degrees around the work area. Ensure loose ground is eliminated for sure footing.
Hold the Axe Properly
Right-handed use: Grab the axe with the left hand, palm facing upward (towards you) just above the knob of the axe handle. Grab the neck of the axe handle with the right hand and palm facing away. Reverse the instructions for left-handed use.
Accuracy First
Focus on accuracy first rather than power for effective use. Multiple blows to the same location rather than scattered and powerful blows will cut through faster.
