A hatchet is often referred to as a survival tool due to its multi-purpose nature. It is handy for cutting tree limbs and for chopping. But it is probably most known for splitting kindling for firewood.
Hatchets are a lot smaller than axes, about half the length of an axe. The head-size is smaller with a significant taper. Hatchets are sized to fit into tighter spaces, they can be used with one hand and require less backswing than a traditional axe. Hatchets typically have a hammer head on the opposite side of the bit for striking purposes.
Editor’s tip: Hatchets aren’t just for work anymore – you will find a wide selection of throwing hatchets for sport at Cabela’s Canada.
