Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and tinnitus (ringing, roaring, or buzzing in the ears) can be caused by loud sounds damaging the inner structures of the ear. The louder the sound, the faster damage is done.
Gas powered tools often make a lot of noise, so wearing ear protection while working with them is important. Cultivators, chainsaws, mowers, there is a long list of potential noisemakers that may have damaging consequences.
Noise reduction tools on the market generally fall under three categories
- Earplugs including: rolldown foam, push-to-fit, pre-moulded, formable, custom moulded, and semi-insert.
- Earmuffs that include cups on a head/neck band and cap-attached earmuffs.
- Dual protection includes combination of earplugs and earmuffs.
What is the Noise Reduction Rating (NRR)?
The NRR is a single number rating given in decibels. It was devised to give purchasers and users of hearing protection a guideline of what level of noise protection they can expect from their earplugs or earmuffs when properly fitted.
In addition to the NRR number, earplugs and earmuffs should come with an attenuation table detailing how much they reduce noise at different frequencies. This table gives a good picture of the strengths and weaknesses of the hearing protection you may be considering.
