The tool originates from Japan, where it has been used for centuries to cultivate vegetables and collect specimens for bonsai. The word Hori means 'to dig' in Japanese. Repeating it twice emulates the repetitive sounds of digging.
The Hori-Hori knife is multipurpose, and it is often referred to as a soil knife or weeding knife. It can both cut and dig and is therefore good for: weeding, planting, dividing perennials and even cutting sod.
The bladed of the Hori-Hori knife is beveled for digging and shoveling with a serrated edge for sawing. The blade is also marked with a ruler to measure soil depth and facilitate planting.
The handle is typical differentiator between brands of Hori-Hori knives. Traditional styles tend to have wooden or bamboo handles, but rubber and plastic handles are also now available.
