Small-Scale Farming is Worth It! | Small Farm Canada

Each year, thousands of Canadians explore starting a farm, often on a small scale, direct‑market, or diversified model. While Canada recorded approximately 189,874 farms in the 2021 Census of Agriculture, farm exits continue to outpace new entries, with an estimated 3,500 farms leaving the sector annually through retirement or consolidation.

According to FCC, at the same time, new and returning farmers continue to enter agriculture, particularly through small farms focused on vegetables, livestock, and local food production.

Women are playing a growing role in this shift. Statistics Canada reports that women now represent 30.4 percent of farm operators nationwide, totaling nearly 80,000 women farmers.

Throughout June, Small Farm Canada published a series of practical articles and resources designed to help prospective farmers navigate land access, infrastructure planning, marketing, and regulatory requirements, providing timely guidance for those – who are brave enough, or passionate about the land – and are ready to take the next step.
