Despite heavy snow blanketing the region, Lanark County Seedy Saturday 2026 proved once again that community, seeds, and shared purpose can overcome almost any obstacle.
“I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you — whether you were with us on March 14th this year or have been part of Lanark County Seedy Saturday in years past — for being part of what makes this event so special,” said Scott Sigurdson of Indian Creek Orchard Gardens in an email following the event.
Held on a day when winter made its presence strongly felt, the 2026 gathering still drew an impressive turnout. Farmers, gardeners, and seed savers arrived in force, underscoring the deep-rooted support for the annual event and its mission of fostering local food resilience.
Organizers were especially pleased to share that the event cover charge raised $900 for the Lanark County Interval House, a local organization that supports individuals and families in need. “That's something to feel genuinely good about,” Sigurdson noted.
What is Seedy Saturday?
Seedy Saturdays are community-based events held across Canada, typically in late winter or early spring, that celebrate seeds, local food systems, and sustainable growing practices. These events often include seed swaps, seed sales from small-scale producers, educational workshops, and opportunities to connect with local farmers and garden organizations.
For small-scale farmers and growers, Seedy Saturdays offer both practical and cultural value. They provide access to regionally adapted seeds, help preserve biodiversity, and strengthen relationships within local food networks. The events also serve as an early-season gathering point, when the growing year is full of planning and possibility.
Lanark County Seedy Saturday has become a particularly well-loved example of this tradition, combining education, commerce, and community support under one roof.
Looking Ahead to 2027
With the success of the 2026 event still fresh, planning is already underway for the next gathering. Lanark County Seedy Saturday 2027 is scheduled for March 20, returning once again on the third weekend of March.
Organizers encourage community members to mark their calendars early. Vendor applications and additional event details will be shared in the fall, as planning ramps up for another year of seeds, learning, and local connection.
From snowstorms to strong community turnout, Lanark County Seedy Saturday continues to demonstrate the resilience and generosity of Canada’s small-farm and local food community, one seed at a time.
