Senator Robert Black was elected as Deputy Leader of the Canadian Senators Group in December, a position he will begin in 2026.
He focused on sharing the Senate Standing Committee on Agriculture and Forestry’s soil report, Critical Ground, released in June 2024, whenever he had speaking engagements. The report emphasizes soil’s role in Canada’s economy, environment, and society. “Celebrating the one-year anniversary, we received positive feedback from Canadians and agricultural communities nationwide,” Black said.
Black engaged with stakeholders from B.C. to Manitoba to Nova Scotia, learning about soil research and farming practices. “Hearing about innovative work in research and on farms inspired me. Canada’s soil health is in capable hands,” he stated.
To support soil protection, he introduced Bill S-230 on June 10, 2025, proposing a national strategy for soil health conservation. The bill passed second reading in November, with further study planned for 2026.
Black continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to soil and agriculture in Canada.
