Learn to Grow Pawpaw in Your Own Backyard
The pawpaw tree (Asimina triloba) is a rare tree native to the Carolinian Zone that has been gaining attention in recent years, mainly for being the bearer of North America's largest native fruit!
Pawpaw was once cultivated extensively by Indigenous communities, but you won’t find them in your produce aisle today. When early colonists cleared forests, the tree almost went extinct. But the fruit is making a comeback. Foodies and chefs love the novelty of the obscure delicacy with its complex flavours of custard, kiwi and butterscotch. At Refined Fool Brewing Company in Sarnia, ON, special batches of “Papa Al's Pawpaw Ale” uses fresh local pawpaw in the brew. But for many working to restore the tree to abundance is the key.
Join Jennifer Nantais, Healthy Habitat Manager with Carolinian Canada, to learn about the history of the pawpaw, why this tree is special to many people, and how to grow the pawpaw and other native species in your own yard.
