The modern honeybee research centre at the University of Guelph is helping support farmers and small-scale beekeepers has opened. The upgraded facility provides more space and better tools for learning, research, and practical training.
The centre includes classrooms, research labs, and areas for bee breeding and hive management. It also maintains hundreds of beehives and pollinator gardens to study bee health in real conditions.
This expansion allows more people to learn modern beekeeping methods. According to experts, managing bees has become more difficult due to pests, climate change, and changing environmental conditions.
“The Luckevich Pinchin Honeybee Research Centre demonstrates U of G’s leadership in advancing the future of agri-food,” said Dr. John Cranfield, dean of the Ontario Agricultural College. “The centre has the capacity to expand its research impact, educate more students and beekeepers, and deepen its collaboration with industry partners.”
“Beekeeping has gotten far more complex in recent years,” said Paul Kelly, the HBRC’s research and apiary manager. “People need to learn about the biology of the honeybees, but also the pests that affect them, climate change, nutrition and breeding.”
The centre also focuses on reducing losses in bee colonies. New facilities such as incubation rooms and labs help scientists study diseases and develop stronger bee populations.
Past research has shown that the Varroa mite is one of the biggest threats to bees. Studies led by Dr. Ernesto Guzman continue to guide efforts to protect colonies and improve survival rates.
Education is a key part of the centre’s work. Students from around the world take part in bee biology courses each year. Weekend training programs are also available for farmers and beginner beekeepers.
The centre shares knowledge through videos and online learning resources in multiple languages. This makes it easier for small farmers everywhere to access useful information.
With better training and research support, the centre helps strengthen pollinator health and supports future food production for farms of all sizes.
