Did you know that according to Canadian Agricultural Injury Reporting data, 435 children and youth died due to farm-related incidents between 1990 and 2020? What is more shocking is that the highest fatality rate was among children aged one to four. If you don't want your children or grandchildren becoming one of the statistics, we encourage you to participate in FarmSafe Week.
The Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) is bringing back Kids FarmSafe Week from May 12 to 18 to focus on child and youth safety in agricultural settings. With the slogan “Nurturing the Future of Agriculture,” the week is designed to educate and empower families to create safer farm environments.
CASA’s campaign responds to serious data: between 1990 and 2020, 435 young lives were lost to farm-related accidents in Canada. Children aged one to four were the most affected.
“Today’s kids are tomorrow’s farmers and ranchers, and the farm is a unique workplace where families live, work and play. That is why, as an industry, we must work together to create safe and healthy environments for children and youth on Canadian farms,” said Sandra Miller, CASA’s Executive Director. “Kids FarmSafe Week is an opportunity to raise awareness about preventable farm safety risks and hopefully inspire more farms to embrace a culture of safety to protect the next generation of Canadian agriculture leaders.”
Each day during the week will highlight a key safety area such as safe equipment use, preventing drownings, animal handling, and play zones. The campaign includes a fun coloring contest and a live webinar to help families learn how to involve children in safety efforts.
CASA can offer free educational kits to help children become farm safety ambassadors.
