Small farms have long been aware of the benefits of cover crops. But we thought this research provided a different angle on the top that was quite interesting. While this research was specifically related to corn, the concept is worth researching for other crops as well.
Researchers have discovered that the choice of cover crops can shape how future crops respond to insect pests. The study, published in Basic and Applied Ecology by researches at Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences investigated how different cover crops influence plant defenses and interactions with beneficial insects.
The researchers found that corn planted in soil previously grown with pea cover crops produced higher levels of indole, a chemical signal that helps nearby plants activate protective responses against insect attacks. At the same time, these corn plants had reduced levels of benzoxazinoids, naturally occurring compounds that can repel or suppress pests.
The study also revealed that predator insects, including lady beetles, were more likely to prey on caterpillars feeding on corn grown in pea-conditioned soil. Scientists suggest that cover crops may affect not only plant health but also the characteristics of the insects that consume those plants.
“This allows me to go into the field and tell growers that the cover crops they select changes its potential resistance to pathogens and insects, and that each insect species may respond differently to each crop,” said Jared Ali, associate professor of entomology and director of Penn State’s Center for Chemical Ecology.
“That's an insight we didn’t have before. There was anecdotal evidence, maybe some farmers had noticed a difference, but now we have the science behind why that's really possible and what mechanism allows that to happen.”
The findings could help farmers use cover crops more strategically to support sustainable pest management and crop production. Future research will examine how soil biology, nutrient availability, plant growth, and yields contribute to these natural defense processes.
