The Canadian government has opened applications for the fourth cohort of the Canadian Agricultural Youth Council, offering an important opportunity for young farmers and rural youth to participate in shaping the future of agriculture.
This program is designed to bring forward the voices of young people involved in farming, food production, and rural development. Individuals aged 18 to 30 who work or study agriculture or contribute to food systems are encouraged to apply during the five-week intake period.
"Youth are critical to developing the future of Canada's agriculture and agri-food sector. With today's announcement, I am calling for committed and thoughtful young people with a passion for agriculture to apply for membership on our Canadian Agricultural Youth Council," said Heath MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.
“Together, we can empower the next generation to shape a more resilient, innovative, and sustainable agriculture and agri-food sector," said MacDonald.
The Youth Council gives members a platform to share ideas on key challenges. These include improving farm sustainability, adapting to changing climates, using new technologies, and managing global market changes. These issues are especially important for small farms that must respond quickly to evolving conditions.
For rural communities, the program provides a chance to highlight real challenges and opportunities. Young farmers can share their experiences and suggest practical solutions that can support growth and stability in smaller agricultural operations.
The council has already proven successful through earlier groups. It started in 2020 and included young participants from across Canada with different roles in agriculture. This diversity helped create meaningful discussions and useful recommendations.
"The Canadian Agricultural Youth Council gave me a rare platform to exchange ideas with passionate young leaders from across Canada and beyond, deepening my understanding of the issues and opportunities shaping the future of food and farming," said William McManiman, Co-Chair, Canadian Agricultural Youth Council.
“Its diversity of voices from all regions of the country and including Indigenous voices, encapsulating producers, students, advisors, technicians and scientists, created an inspiring environment where complex challenges became powerful moments of collaboration," said McManiman.
“I encourage all curious and committed young people to apply for the Youth Council and help build a more innovative, sustainable, and inclusive sector," said McManiman.
Selected members will serve a two-year term starting in fall 2026. The group will include new and returning members, with a focus on building a strong and balanced council of up to 25 participants.
Applicants must complete questions about their experience and provide insights on how agriculture can improve. This helps identify individuals who are committed to the sector and willing to contribute actively.
