Last year after publishing a story about the Jerusalem artichoke (Sep-Oct 2024 Small Farm Canada magazine), we had a question from a subscriber. They wanted to know, where to get Jerusalem artichoke rootstock. I tried a couple of places at the time but no luck.
When I was shopping for potato seed stock recently, I also found Jerusalem artichoke at Metchosin Farm. Metchosin Farm is a seed breeding farm on Vancouver Island. They have BC certified organic, non-GMO, open-pollinated seed. And they only sell seed that they have produced on their farm.
I was navigating my way to tubers as Metchosin Farm (MetchosinFarm.ca) have some very interesting potato seed stock varieties available. Especially if you are interested in saving your own seed for next season.
It was just luck that I came across the Jerusalem artichoke root stock. But knowing the importance of understanding where seed stock is coming from and how it has been bred is what really brings me back.
