We have covered some unusual products for plant nutrition in Small Farm Canada magazine. Products like molasses, Squid Juice and wool (November-December 2023.) We would like to add an alfalfa-based fertilizer option.
For a bit of background, molasses is the byproduct of sugar production. Even though it is a byproduct, molasses is full of vitamins and minerals. As a result, molasses as fertilizer is possible too.
In Squid Juice the “waste” from calamari production is recovered and converted to a fertilizer that contains nutrients that are readily available for plant use and acts as a bio stimulant in soil.
Wool pellets can be a local, sustainable, and a long-term way to improve soil quality for growing more and better food. Wool acts as a slow-release fertilizer with essential and micronutrients. When pelletized, wool in soil also helps to regulate water, reducing the need to water as well as increasing soil aeration.
Alfalfa-based fertilizer pellets is another sustainable option that is well-suited for organic farming, market gardening or for anyone looking to enhance their soil. They are made from natural alfalfa plants without synthetic chemicals or additives. The pellets enrich the soil with organic matter, improve nutrient availability, and enhance soil microbial activity.
Alfalfa pellets can be used as a standalone fertilizer. But are also often recommended in combination with compost or well-rotted manure, to create a balanced nutrient profile. The combination provides a broader spectrum of nutrients and improves overall soil health.
Alfalfa pellets are rich in nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium (NPK), and other micronutrients. Alfalfa pellets also contain organic matter, which improves soil structure and promotes beneficial microbial activity, making them a well-rounded choice for soil health and plant growth.
While alfalfa pellets are primarily designed for soil application, you can create a liquid alfalfa tea by soaking the pellets in water for several days. This alfalfa tea can be used as a foliar spray to provide nutrients directly to the leaves of your plants.
Editor’s Note: Small Farm Canada will be at the Guelph Organic Conference with Heritage Livestock Canada outside of Peter Clark Hall. Hope to see you there!
