At Small Farm Canada, emissions and odours are a hot topic and can be for the home composter too.
Are you bothered by odours and flies coming from the compost? Here is a Canadian product called Bin Breeze that claims it will work to eliminate pesky odours and fruit fly challenges related to in home composting. Even when it comes to composting toilets, they claim Bin Breeze can help. Here is the Bin Breeze mission:
At Bin Breeze our mission is to reduce the impact of food waste everywhere it's produced. We achieve this by making the practice of food waste diversion or 'organics recycling' easy and better for the planet. Once we were just like you, setting up fruit fly traps and pinching our nose every time we opened our compost bin. We knew there had to be a better way to manage food waste at home and in the office — and it led us to founding Bin Breeze.
Bin Breeze is the world's first all-natural and non-toxic indoor composting powder. The circular economy product is made from waste wood that would otherwise be burnt, and that is instead processed and combined with specialty minerals. Bin Breeze is scientifically formulated to instantly eliminate compost odors and emissions, and naturally dehydrate and eliminate fruit flies, all while creating a better compost for the garden or community. Bin Breeze sequesters carbon that would otherwise be burnt and contribute to climate change, encourages food waste diversion and utilization within the home, and reduces the methane emissions of the waste prior to processing at a composting facility.
Our vision is of a world where EVERY SCRAP IS SAVED and no food waste is ever sent to landfill. Join the journey and start composting today!”
My main question is about cost…This box claims to contain enough for 80 applications and at the cost that is about 19 cents per application. If you applied it 3 or 4 times per bin and turn over the bin 3 times per week, that is an extra $1.71 per week or an extra $90 per year per small in-home composting bin.
My math may be way off but demonstrates that little extras do add up.
