Having a tool collection is cool if they are useful and not just gathering dust. I got to thinking about it while perusing the Canadian Tire flyer when I spotted the electric ice augers. They are outside our farm budget for the short window of time that the pond freezes these days. We would only use it to drill holes to flood the pond for skating, but it would be handy for fence posts.
Upon further research (the clue is in the name -- ice auger), the blades are completely different for ice and earth augers. As the ice auger drills, but the earth auger displaces.
It seems I am not alone in thinking about a multi-auger, as I came across the following discussion forum on Outdoorsdirectory.com.
“Apologies if this has been discussed before but I don't see anything really addressing my question. I'm wondering if folks are able to utilize different augers for ice fishing and earth work using the same powerhead. My problem is that I'm inherently cheap and if I can make do with one tool for two jobs that makes sense to me. So is it feasible, or better yet does anyone have success stories?”
